Black-backed Woodpecker_2011

Photo: Christian Artuso. Feb 20th 2011 west of Elma, Manitoba. A pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers displaying with much tail fanning, bowing, calling and posturing on either side of the tree trunk (looked like they were playing peek-a-boo). Copulation was observed shortly afterwards. This seemed to warrant one of the first 2011 records for the atlas, despite the very early date!

House Wren

Photo: Katharine Schulz. A House Wren peers out of a box in Winnipeg (known active nest). Atlas code: AE (Adult entering) = confirmed breeding. Note, care is required with wrens as they build and "enter" dummy nests - the code AE requires more evidence than with other species (as was the case in this example), otherwise a lower code such as "V" can be used.
